Attapulgite (palygorskite) is a needle-shaped clay which, unlike bentonite, retains its viscosity in salt water. That property makes it the primary choice for drilling mud in salt formations and offshore drilling. Its absorbent grade is also used in pet litter, industrial oil absorption and as a carrier for agricultural pesticides.
