Diatomite, or diatomaceous earth, is formed from the silica shells of fossilised single-celled algae, which is what makes it so porous and light. Its filtration grade is used in beverage, edible-oil and swimming-pool filters, and its filler grade in paint and plastics. Calcined grade contains crystalline silica and requires respiratory protection when handled.
