Ethoxylated products are made by adding ethylene oxide units to a fatty alcohol or fatty acid. Varying the number of units (from 2 to 10 moles) tunes the balance between water-loving and oil-loving character, which is what makes them the basis of detergents, emulsifiers and textile auxiliaries.
