Phosphate rock is the primary feedstock of the phosphate fertilizer industry, and its grade is normally expressed as P₂O₅ or its equivalent BPL. For phosphoric acid and DAP/MAP production a grade above 30% P₂O₅ is preferred, while lower grades serve direct agricultural application or animal feed. The CaO to P₂O₅ ratio and the cadmium content matter particularly in European markets.
