Vermiculite is a layered mineral whose layers separate on heating, multiplying its volume. The exfoliated form is light, thermally insulating and non-combustible, and is used in insulation, growing media, safe packaging of hazardous goods and refractory applications. Particle size and bulk density determine the grade.
