Vinyl acetate monomer is a colourless liquid with a sweet odour, produced from ethylene and acetic acid. Its main use is in polyvinyl acetate and polyvinyl alcohol — the basis of wood glue, water-based paints and the interlayer of automotive safety glass. Because it self-polymerises readily, it is always supplied with a hydroquinone inhibitor.
